One of Arizona's most historic steak restaurants, Monti's is located in what was then the hacienda of Charles Trumbull Hayden, the impetus behind Tempe. According to local sources, it is the longest continuously inhabited building within the Phoenix Metro area and since its construction in 1871, the old property appears as it did that century. After the Hayden family left the property, it had several owners and sometimes fell into neglect, but then in 1954, Leonard F. Monti bought the property and retained the moniker of La Casa Vieja or "Old House". Today, the restaurant has 14 dining rooms and the menu focuses on USDA Prime served with all the usual accoutrements like vegetables, potatoes and pastas. The restaurant is also conveniently located near Tempe's lake and it provides a perfect departure point to visit the shops down Mill Avenue and Arizona State University.
