Situated just off Poplar Avenue in a shopping center strip, this cozy neighborhood bar has become a favorite stop for the growing East Memphis business set. Many use it as an after-work place to meet with friends from the office or to bring visiting clients. Weekends offer an eclectic assortment of live music played by local bands from the Memphis music scene, with no cover charge.
Highland Street runs along the edge of the University of Memphis, but it is no strip of boutiques and pizza places. And Newby's is not a haven for wealthy, preppy kids, either. It has a feeling of reality, with a heady mix of people and music. Local bands play here almost nightly on one of the two stages. There is no telling what you might hear—it could be folk or alternative rock—but it will almost never be top 40 or boring.

Level II Entertainment Complex offers state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, along with a dance floor that can hold more than a thousand people! The atmosphere is excellent and the DJ booth spins great numbers ranging from chart-busters, rock, electronic, trance to break beats, funk and Eurostyle. The clubs host a number of events and theme-parties, but "Viva Las Vegas", held every Friday night, is the most popular of all. Dress code is strictly enforced.

Before you go inside Java Cabana, stop and look at the window for a few minutes. Drop a few coins in the Elvis Impersonator's shrine to see what happens. After you have soaked in the memorabilia and hodge-podge collections, go inside for an experience right out of the beatnik era of the '50s and ‘60s. If you are lucky, you will be there for one of the frequent poetry readings by local writers, or some retro music played on acoustic guitar. Oh, yes—the coffee's pretty good,too. No alcoholic beverages served.
Hi-Tone has a cool bar which serves a decent variety of drinks, especially some cheap beer. It's definitely the local favorite for live music, with lesser known bands as well as big names like Elvis Costello and Duncan Sheik having performed here. The casual atmosphere of the Getaway encourages patrons to kick back and relax. The bar is open throughout the day, unusual in this fairly conservative community, making it a great place to go if you're in jet lag and cannot sleep. Drink specials change each night. The show is performed Thursday through Saturday nights only.
