Atlanta is the capital city of and most populous city in Georgia. While the area was originally populated by a sparse assortment of Creek and Cherokee tribes, the land was ceded to America in 1821. Atlanta was fairly small in the era before the Civil War, though its position at the junction of two rail lines soon made the town important as a hub for military supply distribution to nearby armies. The city was razed to the ground by General Sherman, completely destroying all but the churches and hospitals within its borders. This blank canvas allowed Atlanta to rebuild to magnificent proportions, however, and the city soon boomed as a major site of culture and finance. Atlanta is also notable for its history in the fight for civil rights as the locus of organizing for Dr. King.
