Shillings on the Square is an upscale dining spot in suburban Marietta catering to a well-heeled clientele that appreciates exquisite continental dishes in a charming setting. The antiquated building faces Marietta Square, the picturesque, historic seat of Cobb County. Sip a glass from the fine wine selections while listening to classical piano music tinkling in from the bar. Favorites include the steaks, enormous salads and the occasional traditional regional item. Proper attire is required and reservations are strongly recommended. This restaurant is open daily and also has weekend brunches.
Since opening Marietta's historic square, La Famiglia has become a family favorite for Italian dining. A small store-front hides a narrow room with mirrors along the right wall. White tablecloths line the sparse tables, with music tuned soft to provide the perfect unobtrusive undertone. The Veal Scaloppine is very good, served in white wine with fresh lemon juice, artichokes and capers. A wide menu of traditional selections is also well prepared. A growing wine list, currently with 12 selections, has been carefully chosen, and Italian Peroni Beer is available.
These folks know something about creating an island setting. The interior is island rich, with dark wood walls, a long bar, and tables arranged for dining or mingling. Outside, tables with umbrellas line the cobble stoned alley, offering great open air dining. Much more of a restaurant than bar, Hemingway's Bar & Grill puts out consistently good food for lunch and dinner.
Once a fire station and then a bank, this historic Marietta site has been converted into MacCracken's, an Irish pub with two bars, a bustling front dining room, cozy lounging rooms and outdoor dining in a courtyard. The old bank vault is still there, though now it holds beer instead of money. Beer selections include the traditional pub choices of Guinness, Bass, Bodington's and others, but it's the food that draws crowds. Corned beef and cabbage, shepherd's pie, fish and chips, and even a full Irish breakfast are included on the menu. Expect live entertainment on the weekends, usually in the form of Celtic folk rock.
