    »Chicago

    November 01, 2014 8:00 PM

Full of sizzling songs, seductive dance numbers and a story that packs a powerful punch in our fame-obsessed society, Atlanta Lyric Theatre's production of "Chicago" tells a tantalizing tale set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s. It's the story of convicted murderers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who will stop at nothing to get the attention of the press and celebrity attorney Billy Flynn. Their malicious crimes turn them into media darlings, producing a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. A smash on Broadway and in its film adaptation, this biting satire features the unforgettable music of John Kander and Fred Ebb, including "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango" and many more hits.

    »The Pillowman

    November 01, 2014 8:00 PM

The ghoulish pleasure of a well-told "scary story" reaches its pinnacle in "The Pillowman", Martin McDonagh's shocking, disconcerting and altogether memorable play. Set largely in an interrogation room in an unnamed totalitarian state, this black comedy follows fiction writer Katurian as he is questioned by police. The authorities suspect him of committing a series of murders that are strikingly similar to the gruesome crimes described in his short stories. Since only one of his stories has been published, he is the prime suspect. This brilliant work about storytelling and its implications won McDonagh two Tony Awards, the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play and the 2005 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play.

    »West Side Story

    November 01, 2014 8:00 PM

When it first dazzled the world, "West Side Story" was hailed as "the only classic that gets "younger"" -- and it's still true today. While the vibrancy of other shows fades over time, this brilliant reworking of "Romeo and Juliet" only seems to get brighter and fresher and more potent with each passing decade. Collaborators Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim set Shakespeare's romantic tragedy in '50s New York to explosive effect -- launching not only a Tony-winning Broadway run, but a movie that would win 10 Oscars. Told through breathtaking dance numbers and rapturous songs like "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America" and "I Feel Pretty," the familiar tale of "star-crossed lovers" takes on a compelling urgency and gritty relevance. Now Christina Hoff directs an exciting new production for Fabrefaction Theatre Conservatory.
