Big Cat Rescue is the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated entirely to abused and abandoned big cats. They are home to over 100 lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars and other species, most of whom have been abandoned, abused, orphaned, saved from being turned into fur coats, or retired from performing acts. Their dual mission is to provide the best home they can for the cats in their care and educate the public about the plight of these majestic animals, both in captivity and in the wild, to end abuse and avoid extinction.
This serene patch of green, jutting out from the mainland into the waters, offers a refreshing escape from the bustle of the city. The Old Hillsborough County High School, which was also called Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, is a historic landmark. Now known as the D.W. Waters Career Center, when this building was first built, it served as the county's only high school. It is now a training center for the 11th and 12th grade students in occupational training. The building is featured on the National Register of Historic Places.
River Tower Park is located on the banks of the Hillsborough River. Sprawling over 12 acres (5 hectares), this public space is a popular recreational spot among locals. Unwind with a picnic or a good book on its verdant landscape in view of the Sulphur Springs Water Tower. This Tampa landmark stands at a 231 feet (70 meters) height. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department puts together an interesting program of activities and workshops for all ages that aim at enriching the community. Other facilities include tennis courts, gymnasium, pool, playground and art studio.
