    »Big Surf

    This fun paradise offers relief from the heat of the desert. You can choose to ride the high waves or simply soak up the sun. The Waikiki Beach is one of the biggest original wave pool in America while the Captain Cook's Landing is for the little tykes. Older kids and adults will enjoy water basketball or volleyball at Mauna Loa Bay. Kilauea Cove offers an exciting water slide with panoramic views from the top. Daredevils will love the Tornado Twisters, Hurricane Falls and the dreaded Black Hole. There is a full-service snack bar to refresh and refuel after activities. Big Surf is a great place to be with the entire family.

    »Vista del Camino Park & Community Center

    This 70-acre (28.32 hectare) park in South Scottsdale has recreation facilities as well as meeting spaces that can accommodate up to 1000 guests. Facilities include five ramadas, one spray pool, two fishing lakes, two playgrounds and one basketball court. If taking a walk with your pooch is on the agenda, Vista Del Camino Park has the only dog run in Scottsdale. The 18-hole disc golf course is a fun place to spend an afternoon with friends or family.

    »Tempe Town Lake

    One of the major attractions in the greater Phoenix area, the Tempe Town Lake is a hit with the locals and tourists looking for a place to cool down and escape the heat. It is actually an artificial lake that occupies the dry bed of the Salt River. The lake has many quiet parks and green spaces around where families can relax and also provides recreational opportunities like fishing and swimming.     »Tempe Beach Park

    There are many parks in Tempe, however the Tempe Beach Park is the most recent and well-known of all parks in this college town. Locals come here for recreation on the lake, to bike, to have a picnic with family and friends or just to contemplate. There are many attractions nearby, like pontoon bridges, the Tempe Center for the Arts and the Boat Marina. At the marina, you can rent a boat and take a tour of the lake or if you prefer more manual efforts, rent a paddle-boat for two. There is also a special water splash playground that is designed for kids so they can get soaked during the dog-days of summer.

    »Desert Botanical Garden

    The Desert Botanical Garden began in the 1930s with the goal of preserving the area's pristine desert environment. Today, the garden helps save endangered plants, with the focus still on native flora and special emphasis on succulents. The cactus collection is world-renowned and between the months of March through May, the seasonal blooms are spectacular. The garden also hosts numerous events throughout the year which include the popular 'Butterfly Habitat', the 'Luminarias' during the holiday season and rotating sculpture exhibits from the world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. Don't forget your hat and sunscreen during the summer months.

    The Phoenix Zoo offers a plethora of activities for family recreation. Sprawling over 125 acres (50 hectares), this privately-owned leisure facility is a must visit when in the Valley.     This 60-acre (24.28 hectare) park located within the Indian Bend Wash greenbelt is home to the Wedge Skate Park. It is every skater's dream complete with ramps, curbs and rails making it an awesome place to pick up new tricks. The park also offers an outdoor amphitheater, swimming pool, two lakes, two children's playgrounds. The 5K course along with softball, soccer, basketball and a sand volleyball courts make it a great place to come and work out. Or pack up the family, make some lunch and head on over to the picnic area for a great family out.

    »Tovrea Castle

    This triple-tiered structure on a cactus-covered hilltop was built in the late 20s out of granite, stucco and concrete. San Francisco businessman Allesio Carraro had a vision of building exclusive, custom-built homes around this world-class resort hotel. He lost his dream to a local businessman, A.E. Tovrea, when he unwittingly sold the place a few years later to Della Tovrea, A.E.'s wife. The Tovrea family immediately moved into the vacated property, utilizing it as their family home up until Della's death in 1969. The City of Phoenix purchased the property in 1993.
